The New York Times, November 5, 1917 – Carrie Chapman Catt makes a final appeal to the men voting in New York on the suffrage referendum: “Remember that our country is fighting for democracy, for the right of those who submit to authority to have a voice in their own government. Vote for woman suffrage because it is part of the great struggle towards democracy. Vote for it as an earnest of our country’s sincerity, when it says that it fights for democracy.” read clipping

The New York Times, November 5, 1917 – Letter to the Editor – Carrie Chapman Catt compliments The Times on its impartial reporting, even though the editor is clearly against women's suffrage. Her letter is in response to the article of November 4, where The Times called a recent suffrage event “one of the greatest meetings of the suffrage campaign.” Now that President Wilson has endorsed suffrage, she questions whether the people against suffrage are disloyal to the president. read clipping
