The New York Times, October 24, 1917 – In addition to New York, the electorate in Ohio will vote on a suffrage referendum. Although the Ohio State Legislature granted partial suffrage to women in February, the law was suspended pending a voter referendum. read clipping

The New York Times, October 26, 1917 – Front Page – President Wilson gives a speech endorsing suffrage in every state. He asserts the war has brought to the forefront a struggle between two forms of government — democracy and the autocratic rule of Germany. He says suffrage for women is a fundamental question for democracy. read clipping

 

The New York Times, October 27, 1917 – Women in Indiana lose the right to vote. The State Legislature passed a partial suffrage bill in February, but the State Supreme Court rules the law is unconstitutional. Carrie Chapman Catt says the Indiana Constitution is almost impossible to amend, so the only way to give the women in Indiana the right to vote is through a Federal Suffrage Amendment. read clipping

 

The New York Times, October 27, 1917 – The decision of the Indiana Supreme Court will not affect suffrage in Illinois because the Illinois Supreme Court has already ruled that partial suffrage for women in Illinois is constitutional. read clipping
