The New York Times, October 28, 1917 – Front Page – Carrie Chapman Catt leads a suffrage parade of 20,000 women in New York City. Women of all ages and races are included. Many of the shop owners along Fifth Avenue display the suffrage colors. Mrs. Norman de R. Whitehouse leads the New York delegation. read clipping

 

The New York Times, October 28, 1917 – The decision of the Indiana Supreme Court that the State Legislature cannot grant suffrage to women may affect the partial suffrage won in other states. In North Dakota, Ohio, Arkansas, Nebraska, Michigan, and Rhode Island, the State Legislatures passed partial suffrage laws in 1917 without going through the process of voter referendums to amend the state constitutions. read clipping

 

The New York Times, October 30, 1917 – Letter to the Editor – In this long letter, the author asserts that the men of New York should vote against women's suffrage unless they want half the seats in the Legislature to be filled with women. She says that giving women the vote will mean that women will continue to carry their own burdens and will be forced to also carry the societal load currently borne by men. read clipping
