The New York Times, September 30, 1917 – Editorial – Looking ahead to the upcoming election in New York, the editor of The Times recounts the suffrage referendum defeats in other states. Since 1913, only the sparsely populated states of Montana and Nevada have extended suffrage to women through voter referendums. Partial suffrage in other states has been achieved through the actions of the State Legislatures, not a vote by the electorate. read clipping
