The New York Times, August 21, 1920 – Front Page – The Speaker of the House in Tennessee fails to get enough votes to reconsider suffrage, and the time allowed for reconsideration has expired. A final procedural vote tomorrow will end the period for reconsideration. However, a judge, who is also president of the Constitutional League, says he is prepared to file an injunction to preclude the governor of Tennessee from certifying the suffrage vote. The injunction is based upon the requirement in the Tennessee Constitution to wait until a new Legislature is elected before voting on federal amendments. read clipping
