The New York Times, August 21, 1920 – The governor of Connecticut, who has been missing from the Capitol for several days, is found at his home in Hartford. If he had left the state, the lieutenant governor said he would convene a special session of the Legislature to act on suffrage. read clipping

 

The New York Times, August 21, 1920 – The governor of Tennessee is ready to send the certification of the suffrage vote to the US Secretary of State, who says he will act quickly to proclaim the Suffrage Amendment is added to the US Constitution. Even so, eighteen states require "enabling acts" regarding the logistics of women voting for the first time. Five of the states have already passed the required legislation. The governors will have to call special sessions of the Legislatures to allow women to vote in the 1920 election. read clipping

 

The New York Times, August 22, 1920 – Front Page – A temporary injunction for five days prevents the governor of Tennessee from forwarding the certification of the suffrage vote to the US Secretary of State. In a surprise move, twenty-five anti-suffrage members of the Tennessee House flea to Alabama, so there is not a quorum for the procedural vote to end the reconsideration period. They are out of the jurisdiction of the House Sergeant of Arms, so they cannot be forced to return. read clipping
