The New York Times, August 9, 1920 – The Tennessee House is scheduled to meet, but the lack of a quorum may delay action. Carrie Chapman Catt is personally directing the NAWSA forces in Tennessee. The poll from the National Woman’s Party shows two more votes are needed in the Tennessee House, and one more vote in favor of suffrage is needed in the State Senate. The New York Times, August 10, 1920 – The special legislative session, called in North Carolina to address tax law, will also address the Suffrage Amendment. The governor of the state, opposed to suffrage, says he will ask the Legislature to ratify the Suffrage Amendment for the good of the Democratic Party. read clipping

 

The New York Times, August 10, 1920 – The Tennessee legislative session opens, and the governor urges ratification of the Suffrage Amendment. Carrie Chapman Catt says, if the legislators stand by their pledges, the Amendment will be ratified. The National Woman’s Party says their counts now show there are enough votes in both chambers.
