The New York Times, July 25, 1920 – Alice Paul says Governor Cox is working vigorously for suffrage in Tennessee, and that the Democrats will get credit for suffrage if Tennessee ratifies the Federal Amendment. The New York Times, July 26, 1920 – Front Page – Carrie Chapman Catt announces that NAWSA has secured enough pledges from legislators in Tennessee to ratify the Suffrage Amendment. read clipping

 

The New York Times, July 27, 1920 – Front Page – The governor of Tennessee announces a special election on August 5 to fill twelve vacancies in the State Legislature before the special legislative session, which is scheduled to begin August 9. There are three open seats in the State Senate and nine openings in the Tennessee House. read clipping

 

The New York Times, July 30, 1920 – Without counting the twelve vacancies to be filled in the special election, Alice Paul says the pro-suffrage forces are six votes short in the Tennessee Senate and fifteen votes short in the Tennessee House, with many legislators still uncommitted. The Republican presidential and vice presidential nominees, Harding and Coolidge, send a telegram to Tennessee saying, “… it is extremely important for Republican success in November that every Republican member of the State Legislature votes for the woman suffrage amendment. Please wire me if we can count on your vote.” read clipping
