The New York Times, June 21, 1920 – The leaders of the National
Woman’s Party think the recent US Supreme Court decision may affect
Tennessee’s ability to act on the Suffrage Amendment. Earlier this month,
the US Supreme Court ruled that states cannot impose additional restrictions,
not detailed in the US Constitution, for ratifying federal amendments. This
overrode an Ohio court decision to uphold the requirement for a voter
referendum on the Suffrage Amendment. In Tennessee and Florida, the
State Constitutions specify an election of the Legislature must take place
